Test Match Special

After watching the cricket highlights last night I decided that a trip down to the last day of the Test Match was a distinct possibility. The game was taking place in Durham, so I just had to way up whether I could face the drive there and back on the same day. After an hour or so of swithering I decided that since the tickets had been reduced in price I really had to go, so I packed my bag.
I set off at ten to seven this morning and arrived at the ground just before ten - plenty of time to spare before the the first ball was bowled. The big worry I had was that I would make all this effort only to be denied a days cricket viewing by the weather but other than a short delay at the start of the day, thankfully the rain held off.

The game was a thoroughly entertaining one. To save the game the West Indies had to bat all day, a feat they never really looked like achieving with their apparent penchant for rash shots. England tied up the win with numerous overs to spare, with local boy Paul Collingwood hitting the winning runs.
Despite the reduction in the ticket pricing, I still had a great seat - just beneath the Windies’ dressing room. It was so close to the players that I could hear the moans and groans as each Caribbean batsman’s wicket was taken!

The drive home seemed to pass really quickly with little traffic on the road and I even managed to get home in time to watch the highlights on TV.

I discovered the following video footage earlier today. It contains some cracking footage of the ‘81 test series with the Aussies and an interview Richie does with the latest Knight of the Realm - Ian Botham. If you are in any way a cricket fan it’s worth a watch, especially with the current Test Match suffering rain delays!

I’m going to try and listen to the climax of the Test Match at Old Trafford this morning. I’ve always had a soft spot for the ‘Windies’ so I’d love to see them get the required runs. It’s so disappointing that it’s not being shown on terrestrial TV and that we have to put up with Channel 5’s hopeless 45-minute highlights show but that’s the way the cookie crumbles I suppose.
In saying that, however, there are always entertaining moments on the radio commentary - especially when Sir Viv is discussing the state of West Indian cricket, or when Boycott is having a moan.
Here’s an example of when radio commentary is truly worth listening to……
